∗This is post is in no way sponsored we just want to share our projects to y’all!∗ First, You will need to gather all the wood. Y’all please keep in mind our ceiling are vaulted on the left side where we are building the fireplace is 101 inches and on the right side is 94 ⅝ inches, so the measurements might be off if your ceiling is taller or shorter, but we are gonna tell y’all how we did it. Then you are gonna wanna build the hearth which is the 6- 2x4’s cut into 16 inches and the 4- 2x4’s cut into 54 inches. First, take 3 of the 16 inch 2x4s and spread them out where you have one on each end of the board and one in the middle, and nail them with your framing nail gun, twice. (Note: if you don't have a nail gun you can use nails and a hammer or 3-inch screws.)Then take your other 54-inch board and put it on the other side and nail again with the framing nail gun. Now, if you want a higher hearth then go find either piece of 2x3 or 2x4s and lay then on their side and nail the two boxes into the boards. (Also note that the length doesn’t matter. We just used scrap pieces) Now that you have all of that nailed together, take it to the place that you are putting the fireplace and nail it to the floor and to a stud on the wall, just so it stays, and don’t move. Now that ¾ inch plywood that you cut is going to either be screwed or nailed to the framing. (Check Instagram for pictures)
Now you need to 52 1/4 2x4's and nail them to the wall with your 3-inch framing nails, but make sure the middle nails goes into a stud. Now, that you got the back braces on the wall make sure that you measure where you want to put your mantle on the fireplace front. We did ours 42 1/2 from the hearth. Now, you are going to pretty much make a rectangle with two 89 3/8 2x3's on one side and two 83 1/4 inch 2x3's please make sure are spaced out 8 1/4 inch so the braces fit. (please note that this is where the height of your ceilings matter the most). Nail these 2x3's to the wall, to the top of the hearth, now take your 8 1/4 inch braces which can either be 2x4 or 2x3's, now you will put these of pieces of wood between the 2x3's. Now you should have a basic frame!
Now to build out! This is where the fireplace really starts to take shape! Now you need the measurement of the lowest board you put on the wall, which ours was 2ft or 24 inches, and nail them to the wall with your framing nail gun. Now to build up! Now, you can add your front frame, which you will have 40 1/2 inch 2x3 on each side which will be 9 ¼ inches away from the 2x4 you put on the back of the wall. Next up is the braces that go behind that which is 9 ¼ inch 2x3 that will be nailed to the 2x4 on the back of the wall, and to the frame. Now you will put a 27-inch 2x3 board above the fireplace opening, this is to nail the brick panels onto and need to go in between the two 2x3’s.
For the brick! on the top we decided to do birck which is harder than we thought, but anyways we measured the three measurements, one in the middle, each other ones on each side. then cut them at an angle. then just do below the mantle and the sides. BOOM! you have an fireplace!!
There will be another blog post on how to build a mantle/ floating shelf, and how to german shearm bricks!
